IFJ trainers Nefeli Angkyridou and Angeliki Lazou introduced tools to combat gender stereotypes in the news and in public discourse. Through critical analysis of articles, photographs and videos, the 15 trainees had the opportunity to analyze and identify stereotypical references embedded in editorial choices, either consciously or unconsciously, with examples from national and international press.
A fruitful and constructive dialogue took place on the way public figures are portrayed in the Greek media, either in newspapers or news portals, or on the radio and television. Latest IFJ gender-responsive guidelines to cover the EU elections were also presented and thoroughly discussed by the group.
Trainers Nefeli Angkyridou and Angeliki Lazou are part of a poll of trainers developed by the IFJ as part of the EU funded project Rewriting the story.
"Participants identified stereotypical automatisms they use and welcomed the way this training helped them reflect on their own journalistic practices after so many years of experience", the trainers said.
The Rewriting the Story project addresses barriers to the fair representation and portrayal of women and men in political life and aims to train 400 journalists across the EU on reporting political life through a gender lens. Partners include the IFJ, the University of Padova and COPEAM.
