According to the AFP, the 35-year old correspondent for Playa News, a website based in Riviera Maya, close to the popular tourist city of Cancun in the state of Quintana, was shot dead by a gunman while he was at a bar in the indigenous community of Felipe Carillo Puerto.

His colleague Ruben Pat at Playa News told AFP that Chan had received deaths threats and had asked for protection from the authorities but did not receive a response.
