The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) joins its Cambodian affiliate,
the Cambodian Association for the Protection of Journalists (CAPJ) in strongly condemning the 20-year jail sentence handed down to
independent radio owner and activist Mam Sonando on October 1, by the Phnom Penh Municipal
Court.
Mam
Sonando, 71, is the owner of Independent radio station Beehive Radio, President
of the Democrats Association, and a prominent public critic of human rights
abuses in Cambodia. He was arrested on July 15 on orders from Prime Minister Hun

Maldives Police Service decision to end its boycott of the independent news and
entertainment channel, Raajje TV.

European Federation of Journalists (EFJ) today has backed calls by Ukrainian
journalists for the withdrawal of proposed legislation that would introduce
criminal responsibility for libel.
Speaking
on the fringes of an EFJ conference in Moscow that is focussing on the ways in

Arne König called for the legislation to be withdrawn: "Right across

of Nepali Journalists (FNJ) about a radio journalist who went missing from
Taplejung, in Nepal’s Eastern Region on September 16.
Madan Poudel who is affiliated
with Nepal’s Radio Tamor 102, has been missing since the evening of September
16. He was last seen at Fulbari, Taplejung reportedly attending an event called
"Taplejung Dance Star 2069".

on DRC President Joseph Kabila to grant presidential pardon for three

Prevention Act 2012 poses a significant threat to press freedom and limits freedom

(FNJ) in condemning the serious assault of a newspaper editor in the mid-western
region of Nepal on September 13.
The FNJ reports
that Nepali Express Daily Editor, Shiva Dotel was
manhandled and attacked by a police team led by Sub Inspector of Nepali Police,
Batti Kumar Pokhrel, near Tribhuwanchowk of Nepalgunj, in Banke on September 13.
Dotel was reportedly
attacked for no apparent reason on the way to his office. He sustained serious head
injuries requiring seven stitches after medical treatment at Bheri Regional

partner organisations and affiliates in India in welcoming the release on bail
of Aseem Trivedi, a cartoonist and anti-corruption campaigner, after his arrest in Mumbai city on September 8 on charges of sedition and causing insult to India’s
‘national honour’.
The charge of sedition under article 124A of the
Indian Penal Code has been withdrawn by the police. Trivedi will continue to
face charges under the Prevention of Insults to National Honour Act and the
Information Technology Act, but was released on September 12, after posting a
bail bond of INR 5,000 (roughly USD 100).

shock and concern regarding the the discovery of the body of journalist Chandan
Nepali, Correspondent for Radio Sky in Murbhung, Gulmi in Nepal’s west on

Nepali had apparently gone missing three days before his body was
found at Bhyagute Cliff in Gulmi. Severe damage found to Nepali’s head has

Two Swedish journalists are among prisoners who have been pardoned in Ethiopia to mark the country's New Year Day. Johan Persson and Martin Schibbye were jailed in December 2011 for 11 years following their conviction for "supporting a terrorist organisation and illegally entering Ethiopia". discharge of Aseem Trivedi, a cartoonist and anti-corruption campaigner
arrested on September 8 on charges of sedition and causing insult to India’s national
emblems.
Trivedi was remanded to a week in police custody by a
court in the city of Mumbai on September 9. Following critical remarks by the

The court said that Corbis Sygma violated the copyright of the photojournalist by digitising his work without explicit consent. of a radio blocktimer Eddie Jesus Apostol, who was reported missing last month,
was recovered from the Liguasan Marsh near the town of Sultan sa Barongis in
Maguindanao, Philippines on September 1.
According

The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ)
joins its affiliate the Alliance of Independent Journalists (AJI) in condemning
the ongoing anti-union activities of Jakarta-based TV station, Metro TV.
As noted in a previous IFJ statement, Metro TV sacked Indonesia journalist Luviana in February 2012,
despite her 10 years of work for the TV station, in apparent response to her
attempts to establish a workers’ union.
While the case has not yet been subjected to an
enforcement power of settlement, Metro TV has not paid Luviana since June 27, in
conflict with Indonesia’s Governmental
Regulation No. 8/1981 on Salary

strongly condemns the attacks on newspersons on professional assignment during
a day-long general strike called on August 28 by a youth-led political organisation
in the north-eastern Indian state of Assam.
According to reports received from the Journalists’ Union
of Assam (JUA), a constituent unit of the IFJ-affiliate, the Indian
Journalists’ Union, a number of journalists were the victims of planned and
targeted attacks that day.

(FNJ) in calling for the authorities of Nepal to act swiftly against political
functionaries of the Nepal Communist Party (Maoist) (NCP-M), who brutally beat
up and injured Nabin Rijal, a former vice-president of the FNJ’s Dailekh district
chapter in the mid-western region on August 25.

from the FNJ, Rijal was attacked by a group of party workers led by local NCP-M

Entertainment & Arts Alliance in expressing concern that foreign
journalists have been banned from accessing the proposed Regional Processing
Centre for Asylum Seekers on Manus Island in Papua New Guinea. By contrast,

joins its affiliate the Indian Journalists’ Union (IJU) in urging the Indian
government to reconsider its strategy of combating rumours that have led to a mass
exodus of people of north-eastern Indian origin, from certain of the country’s industrial
cities.

and suspect in the Maguindanao massacre case, Esmael Canapia, will testify in front of the Quezon City Regional
Trial Court (QC RTC) today in his bid to be
instated as a state witness.
The motion, filed by
the Prosecution, sought to overturn an earlier decision made by the QC RTC which
denied the bids of Inspector Ariel Diongon, Police Officer Rainer Ebus and
militiaman Mohammad Sangki to become state witnesses in the trial. Prosecution lawyers argued that Diongon and Canapia’s
testimonies were necessary to identify those involved in the November 23, 2009
massacre of 58 people in Maguindanao.

Federation of Journalists (IFJ) is concerned by the recent
restrictions on the Chinese media’s ability to report on issues of public concern.
According to reports
received, China’s Central Propaganda Department issued a restrictive order on
August 18, preventing Mainland media from reporting on protests that followed an
incident in which Japanese authorities detained a group of Chinese activists in
relation to the disputed Diaoyu or Senkakus Islands. (The group was released on

The International Federation of Journalists joins partners in the South
Asia Media Solidarity Network (SAMSN) in expressing concern over a policy shift
by the Government of Bhutan policy shift which restricts the advertising earning
potential of all independent media outlets in the country.

(FNJ) in calling for the immediate investigation of a death threat made against journalist
Hemanta Poudel, a reporter with the Samacharpatra daily on August 15 in the far western region of Nepal.
According to reports, a police
officer made the threats against Mr Poudel’s life on behalf of the local Superintendent of
Police Ghanashyam Aryal.
The threats followed the
publication of a report by Sudur Sandesh on August 12, which uncovered local police involvement in cross-border smuggling

journalist in Lahore following her employer’s refusal to pay her salary.
Ms

Association (TLJA) that a radio broadcaster was stabbed in Timor Leste’s
capital city Dili, on August 10.
The reporter has been identified as Leoneto Gonsalves, a presenter
that works at Dili-based community radio station Radio Rankambia, that
covers politics and business, as well as campaigns for media freedom, social
