6443. Murder of Prominent Journalist Pavel Sheremet in Kiev Sparks Outrage  

The killing of Belarus-born journalist Pavel Sheremet, who died in a targeted car bomb in Kiev today, has been widely condemned. The International and European Federations of Journalists, their affiliates in Russia and Ukraine as well as the OSCE media freedom representative Dunja Mijatović have today condemned the murder and called for the killers to face justice. 44-year-old Pavel Sheremet, who worked for the Ukrainskaya Pravda newspaper, died when the car he was driving exploded shortly after it started, according to the Ukrainian Prosecutor's Office. A prominent journalist specialising in relations between Russia and Ukraine has been murdered by a car bomb while on his way to work in Kiev. The International Federation of Journalists and European Federation of Journalists, have joined affiliates in Ukraine and Russia, in condemning the killing. The 44-year-old journalist who worked for Ukrainska Pravda, an independent news site, was killed in car explosion in central Kiev. Media reports quoted Ukrainian officials as saying that the explosion was set off remotely. 6447. South Africa: IFJ demands restoration of basic workers’ rights after four SABC journalists fired  

The South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) must respect workers’ rights, end censorship and reinstate bargaining rights to the journalists’ union. Early this week, eight suspended SABC employers, Jacques Steenkamp, Krivani Pillay, Suna Venter,  Vuyo Mvoko‚ Thandeka Gqubule‚ Busisiwe Ntuli, Lukhanyo Calata and Foeta Krige, were emailed termination letters for speaking out against SABC’s editorial policy, which the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) recently branded outrageous censorship. In just a few days more than 3500 people have signed a petition calling on Agence France Presse to stop stealing photographers’ copyright. The petition was launched by the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) after management at the French-owned agency sought to impose new contracts on freelance photographers in a number of countries. An Iraqi cameraman was killed on 13 July in the south of Mossul, Iraq. The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) joins its affiliate the Iraqi journalist Syndicate (IJS) in condemning the killing and calls for more security for journalists operating on the ground. Mustafa Cambaz, a photojournalist with the Turkish daily newspaper Yeni Şafak was killed during the failed coup of last Friday in Turkey. Journalists at Agence France Presse have called on the company to abide by its own charter and stop discriminating against staff outside of France. The call comes in the wake of the company seeking to impose new contracts on freelance photographers in a number of countries outside of France. Agence France Presse  (AFP) is demanding its photographic stringers across the globe, in offices outside of France, sign “unacceptable” contracts which include the full assignment of their authors’ rights without any additional remuneration. The editor of a newspaper in Lesotho is fighting for his life after being shot and critically injured at his home in the capital, Maseru, on 9 July. The family of the US reporter Marie Colvin have filed a lawsuit in a court in Washington accusing the regime of Bashar al-Assad of killing her. According to the lawsuit, The Sunday Times correspondent, who died on 22 February 2012 in the city of Homs, had been deliberately targeted and killed by the Syrian authorities to stop her from covering government atrocities. 6471. South Africa: Ruling bids to overturn “outrageous censorship” at public broadcaster  

South Africa’s Independent Communications Authority has recommended on 11 July that the country’s public broadcaster ditch a controversial editorial policy which banned journalists from covering violent protests. The Director of a local radio ‘Illusion’ was gunned down in the municipality of Coatepeque located in the Department of Quetzaltenango. The 56-year-old reporter for the People’s Brigada and officer of the Manilla Police District Press Corp, was shot dead outside a watch repair shop owned by his family in Manilla. According to reports, the gunmen walked towards Balcoba and shot him in the head before fleeing on a waiting motorcycle. Balcoba was rushed to a local hospital, but was declared dead on arrival. Balcoba was a veteran journalist, who had covered the local crime and police beat since the 1990s. The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) joins its affiliate the National Union of Journalists of the Philippines (NUJP) in strongly welcoming the murder conviction in the 2010 murder of broadcaster Desiderio Camangyan. The IFJ and NUJP welcome the progress made, but call on the government to take immediate action following the attempted murder of a journalist on June 30. On Monday, June 27, Dennis Lumikid was convicted of murder by the Davao City Trial Court Branch 10. 6487. Peru: three journalists face jail for accusing government of corruption  

The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) has backed calls by its affiliate, the National Association of Journalists in Peru (ANP), to lift a jail threat against three journalists from the Panorama TV programme. The reporters have been accused by the Ministry of Defence of revealing national secrets during a report alleging the involvement of the authorities in a corruption case. The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ), representing 600 000 journalists around the world, joins its affiliate, the Zambian Union of Journalists (ZUJ), in urging the authorities to protect independent journalism, following the arrest of Fred M’membe, editor-in-chief of the independent Zambian newspaper The Post, and two members of his staff. On 21 June, the Zambia Revenue Authority (ZRA) seized the newspaper’s assets over the company’s alleged tax evasion, amounting to $6 million. The International Federation of Journalists has highlighted the dire situation faced by Burundian journalists during a general debate held at the 32th Session of the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva. The International Federation (IFJ) today urged the UN Human Rights Council to ensure that attacks on journalists and other restrictions on press freedom cease in both government and separatist-controlled areas in and around Ukraine. A court in Luxembourg today handed down suspended jail sentences for two whistleblowers 12 months for Antoine Deltour and 9 months for Raphaël Halet) and acquitted the investigative journalist Edouard Perrin in a major case with widespread implications for media freedom. The 25-year-old photojournalist died in a hospital in Turkey of wounds he sustained in a bomb attack on a home in Aleppo he was sharing with another journalist Hadi Al-Abdullah when a explosive device was set off targeting them on 17 June. An independent Syrian journalist has become the third journalist killed in the country in 2016 after he was fatally wounded by a blast that targeted his home in Aleppo. Khaled Issa (25), a photojournalist known for his activism, died on 24 June in a hospital in Turkey. He was sharing accommodation with Hadi Al-Abdullah, another independent journalist and activist, when an explosive device targeted their home in Aleppo on 17 June. The European and International Federations of Journalists (IFJ and EFJ) have condemned police attempts to seize journalistic material from Publico newspaper in Madrid. Officers of the Judicial Police arrived at the editorial offices of Publico on 24 June to gain access to recordings of conversations between Spanish Interior Minister Jorge Fernández Díaz, and the director of the Office of Anti-Corruption of Catalonia, Daniel de Alfonso, which had been exclusively revealed by the paper on Tuesday 21 June. A terrorist attack hit the Rudaw Media Network, based in Erbil, Kurdistan’s capital, on 25 June, leaving five employees with minor injuries. According to the Federation of Journalists in Latin America and Caribbean (FEPALC), the female reporter for El Mercurio and La Verdad newspapers in the Mexican city of Victoria, Tamaulipas state was gunned down in the morning as she was driving to work. She became the second Mexican journalist killed in as many days following the murder of journalist Elido Ramos Zárate on 19 June. Fepalc added that 15 journalists have been killed and 17 others disappeared in the state of Tamaulipas since 2010.

The International Federation of Journalists has called for a halt to the “relentless attack by Iranian authorities on journalism” following new legal threats against an Iranian newspaper. The daily Ghanoon and its editor in chief are facing legal action over an article critical of conditions at a Tehran detention facility. The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) strongly criticizes the recent actions by the Government of Shanwei, Guangdong, against journalists covering protests in Wukan village. The IFJ calls on the local government to end its attack on the media and guarantee the freedom of the press.
