The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) joins the Aliansi Jurnalis Independen (AJI) (Alliance of Independent Journalists, Indonesia) in expressing concern over the killing of an Indonesian journalist outside his home on Sunday, January 25. Beni Faisal, 42, chief editor of Fokus Lampung weekly was shot dead on Sunday night at 8pm in Lampung, on Indonesia’s island of Sumatra. The body of the editor of a small publication, La Union, in Medellin a town of the Veracruz state , east of Mexico, was found in Fabio Altamirano wrapped up in a bag, according to officials quoted in media. Sanchez was abducted by armed men at his home on 2 January. The journalist for Al-Ghadeer satellite television was killed while covering fighting between the Iraqi security forces and militants of the so-called Islamic State (IS) in the Muqdadiyah area north of Baghdad, according to media reports quoting their employers and officials. The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) joins the National Union of Journalists of the Philippines (NUJP) in strongly criticizing the provision in House Bill 362, which seeks to amend Republic Act (R.A.) 53 ‘Sotto Law’ to narrow the parameters of journalism by forcing the issue of accreditation. The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) joins its affiliate the National Union of Journalists of the Philippines (NUJP) in strongly criticizing the decision by the Regional Trial Court Branch 221 to grant bail to one of the accused in the case of the murder of 58 people, including 32 journalists in November 2009. The Ampatuan Massacre is the single deadliest attack on journalists in history.
