The driver of TV presenter Raza Rumi was killed when their car came under heavy fire from unidentified gunmen as the media personality was returning home after his weekly show in the city of Lahore. Rumi is believed to have been the target in the attack, as he had received threats warning him he was on the Taliban’s hit-list. The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) strongly condemns the behavior of Chinese police in Maoming who harassed two Hong Kong journalists and illegally copied all the information on their computers and cell phones while they were reporting on the public outcry against plans to build an industrial plant. The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) joins its affiliate the National Union of Journalists of the Philippines (NUJP) in expressing its condemnation at the brutal killing of a Filipino journalist in Barangay Talaba, Bacoor in the city of Cavite. The European Federation of Journalists (EFJ) has today condemned the cold blooded killing of a Germany photographer, Anja Niedringhaus, at the outskirt of Khost city in Afghanistan ahead of Saturday’s Afghan presidential election. ‘‘We are deeply saddened by the tragic loss of a courageous colleague who has risked her life for bringing the truth to the people, ’’ said Ricardo Gutiérrez, EFJ General Secretary. ‘‘Our thoughts are with her family and friends.’’ Anja Niedringhaus, 48, is an internationally acclaimed photographer. The female photographer for Associated Press was gunned down at a police station in Afghanistan’s eastern province of Khost, according to the statement by the news agency. Anja, a German national, was shot by a police commander who opened fire at the car in which Anja was travelling with another female, Khathy Gannon, a Canadian reporter, media reports said quoting police and government’s sources. Khathy was also injured in the attack and needed medical treatment. The police commander reportedly surrendered t the aothorities after the incident and was arrested.

The journalist, who worked for Sveriges Radio, the Swedish public service radio station was shot dead by an unidentified gunman in a rare daylight attack in Kaboul. Horner, a dual national of Sweden and Great Britain, was a highly respected journalist who worked in New York and London during the 1990's. Since 2001 he had covered the Asia region for Swedish public service radio station, Sveriges Radio.

The female journalist was killed while covering clashes between Muslim Brotherhood suporters and Egyptian security forces in eastern Cairo, according to her employer, private Egyptian newspaper Al-Dustour. She was among three people killed in the clashes which followed the decision by Egyptian army chief, Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, to resign from the military and run for president. It was unclear who was responsible for her death, but the two rival groups - those supporting the army, and those supportive of the Muslim Brotherhood - have blamed each other for the killing.

(10.02.14) The European Parliament Legal Affairs Committee released a study assessing the provisions of national authors’ rights and contract law that affect creators’ bargaining power and contracts to exploit their works in the EU.The study released on 10th February looked at eight EU member states: France, Sweden, Germany, Belgium, Hungary, UK, Poland and Spain.
