Journalist and domestic worker, Yuli Riswati was deported from Hong Kong after a visa dispute. The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) and its affiliate the Aliansi Jurnalis Independen (AJI) condemn the treatment of Yuli Riswati. 3994. China: Reports on Australian writer being tortured  

Recent reports have stated the Australian writer, Yang Zhengjun, who has been detained in Beijing since January 19, 2019, is now subjected to tortures. The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) reiterates its call for his immediate release. Yang Zhengiun was arrested in January on ‘suspicion of espionage’. Yang’s lawyer Rob Stary has reported Yang is being chained and interrogated daily. Ukrainian journalist Oleksandr Vlashchenko was assaulted on November 30th, in the port city of Mykolayiv. So far, the perpetrators have not been caught despite a police investigation. Egyptian journalists Hossam El-Sayed and Solafa Magdy have been arrested and charged with terrorism-related offences amid a crackdown on press freedom in the country. The Iranian authorities have labelled the activities and programs of Iran International TV, a Persian station based in London, as ‘terroristic’, in a serious escalation of the threats against media. One journalist was injured and a media office suffered damage following a rocket attack on Baghdad's heavily guarded Green Zone. Two rockets were fired during the attack, which took place on 17 November. Unidentified assailants attacked Lasantha Wijeratna, a freelance journalist and anti- corruption activist, on November 14. The International Federation of Journalist (IFJ) and its affiliate Free Media Movement (FMM) raise concerns about the attack which took place in the lead-up to the country’s presidential election. Wijeratna was attacked by three men with firearms in his home at around 2.30am on November 14. 4032. Vanuatu: Vanuatu journalist separated from family; denied return home  

A week after Vanuatu’s Daily Post media director had an annual work permit rejected and his residence visa cancelled, he has now been denied the ability to return to Vanuatu. The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) expresses it’s serious disappointment at the Vanuatu government’s handling of McGarry’s case and urgently call on it to enable the editor to be re-united with his family. Israeli spyware Pegasus, suspected to be behind the hacking of WhatsApp worldwide, is found to have targeted Indian journalists, human rights activists and academics. The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) made a submission to Australia’s Senate Inquiry into Press Freedom on October 8, 2019. Dindo Generoso, a radio broadcaster for DYEM 96.7 Bai Radio, was shot dead in Dumaguete City, Negros Oriental by unidentified gunmen on Thursday, November 7. Turkey’s biggest newspaper Hürriyet announced last week the layoff of 45 journalists in one of the largest mass layoffs in the history of the country's media sector. 43 of the redundant workers are members of the Turkiye Gazeteciler Sendikasi (TGS), an IFJ and EFJ affiliate. A Turkish court ordered on 4 November the release under supervision of journalists Ahmet Altan and Nazli Ilicak who had spent three years in jail, accused of participating in the failed 2016 coup. As the Hong Kong protests enter their 22nd week, attacks on the media continue. 4056. The Netherlands: Landmark ruling sets 50% pay increase for photojournalists  

Freelance photojournalists Britt van Uem (Tubantia) and Ruud Rogier (Brabants Dagblad) won on 1st November a lawsuit against DPG Media (formerly De Persgroep). The court ruled that the rates they received for their work, respectively 13 cents per word and 42 euros per photo, were not fair. The judge has increased the rates by 50% to 0.21 cents per word and 65 euros per photo respectively. DPG Media therefore has to pay these two freelancers extra for the work they did in 2018.
