11495. The UK Government Considers Introducing Private Copy Exception Without Compensation  

The UK government is launching a consultation to assess the possibility of introducing private copying into the legal system. The consultation document, introduced by Lord Triesman, the Parliamentary Undersecretary for Intellectual Property, on 9 January proposes to allow consumers to make copies of CD they have already bought as is already the case in many continental European countries such as Germany or France. However, the UK government rejects the introduction of a financial compensation (such as levies) to private copying. The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) is concerned by the killing of Abdul Munir, the producer and presenter of Afghanistan Radio Television in Jawzjan (RTA-Jawzjan), while he was travelling from Jawzjan to Mazar-e-Sharif, the capital of Balkh province. Munir was killed on December 28 at 2.30am when the bus in which he was travelling was attacked by a group of armed people at Temoral, close to Mazar-e-Sharif.   The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) welcomes the arrests of two men suspected of murdering Aklan broadcaster Rolando Ureta on January 3, 2001.
