World Press Freedom Day 2024 - What IFJ affiliates are doing

Many IFJ affiliates are taking action to mark World Press Freedom Day on 3 May. Here is a non-exhaustive list of their initiatives.

Belarus: The Belarus Association of Journalists (BAJ) and the Lithuanian Journalists’ Union will hold an action of solidarity in Vilnius, Lithuania, to support 36 Belarusian journalists who are behind bars. 

Italy: The Federazione Nazionale della Stampa Italiana (FNSI)  general secretary Alessandra Costante will participate in the main event organised by the National Federation of the Italian Press in Conselice (Ravenna) where the only Monument to Press Freedom in Italy is located. Other initiatives are planned in Rome, Palermo, and Naples.

Montenegro: The Trade Union Media of Montenegro (TUMM) will participate in the regional action ‘Five minutes of thunderous silence’, which is organised on the occasion of World Press Freedom Day, 3 May. They invite all their members, as well asl other colleagues, to join the action planned from 11:55 to 12:00. 

Peru: The National Association of Journalists of Peru (ANP) holds several events highlighting efforts to promote and protect press freedom in collaboration with networks such as UNDP, OHCHR, UNESCO, and others. On 3 May, there will be a live broadcast via the ANP Radio network and a forum on press freedom in Peru. On 6 May, ANP will take part at the International Meeting for Press Freedom titled ‘Challenges and Opportunities in Peru’.

Somalia: The National Union of Somali Journalists (NUSOJ) will host a symposium in partnership with the United States embassy in Mogadishu on 'A Press for the Planet: Journalism in the Face of the Environmental Crisis’ to mark World Press Freedom Day.

Spain: The Sindicato de Periodistas de Andalucía will hold a gathering on 3 May at 12:30 to pay tribute to more than one hundred journalists and media workers who were killed in 2023. 

Türkiye: The Journalists’ Union of Türkiye (TGS) will launch its annual Media Freedom Report. It will focus on the precarity of journalists but will also include details about judiciary and administrative intimidation coming from the government. 

Uganda: On World Press Freedom Day, the Ugandan Journalists Union (UJU) voices concerns regarding the safety of journalists, labor exploitation, harassment, censorship, violence by polices, and ongoing press freedom violations in Uganda. Ugandan journalists will join the rest of the world in celebrating the day under the theme “Journalism in the face of the Environmental Crisis”. 

UK: The Union of National Journalists (NUJ) will organise a panel event to celebrate World Press Freedom Day on 3 May 1 PM. The event will be chaired by Seamus Dooley, NUJ assistant general secretary, and speakers will include Nasser Abu Baker, president of the Palestinian Journalists’ Syndicate (PJS); Stella Assange, lawyer and human rights defender; and Behrang Tajdin, BBC Persian TV's economics correspondent and BBC Persian chapel chair. 

Zimbabwe: The Zimbabwe Union of Journalists will organise a discussion on the topic of ‘Press freedom in Zimbabwe: the journey so far’ to commemorate the day.
