The 35-year-old reporter, who covered security and narcotrafficking, was shot dead while attending the nativity play at his child’s school in the municipality of Acayucan located in Veracruz state.
Media reports quoted a witness as saying that a gunman entered the class of Pérez’s child and shot directly at the journalist four times. He became the 13th media professional killed in Mexico since the start of 2017.
