The European
Federation of Journalists (EFJ), the European group of the International Federation
of Journalists (IFJ) today backed Greece's journalists and media
workers who take part in the 24-hour nationwide strike declared by the
country's trade unions between, 11 March, 6am, and 12 March, 6 am.
The Journalists' Union
of Macedonia
and Thrace Daily Newspapers (ESIEMTH), the Journalists' Union of Athens Daily Newspapers (ESIEA) under the auspices of the Panhellenic
Federation of Journalists' Unions (POESY), is taking part in the strike in
demand of the following:
- Withdrawal of the recent anti-labor measures that are injurious not
only to the media workers, but harm the public good of information
itself.
- Safeguard jobs, calling on employers to abandon plans of cuts and redundancies in the sector.
- Full adherence to the sector's collective agreements, for all media
workers.
- Ensuring of the sector's social and pension rights.
This strike takes place two weeks after another general strike against
exceptional austerity measures taken by the Greek government. In the past
years, many industrial actions demanded genuine social dialogue and the guarantee
of autonomous social security schemes.
